One of the challenges of service learning programs, particularly when working with economically privileged students, is that they often benefit the privileged learners more than the communities that they are intending to “serve.” And yet, educators committed to social change understand the importance of exposing privileged youth to life outside out of their own bubbles. Lawyer and writer Bryan Stevenson calls this “getting proximate.” Getting proximate requires that privileged and marginalized communities come to know one another so deeply that they are able to act in solidarity as accomplices and allies. So how do we as educators catalyze this? In this interactive workshop, I will present youth participatory action research (YPAR) as a way of remodeling service learning.
