This Is Not a Service Trip

People keep asking us, What are you doing here in Perú? We are not volunteering. We are not missionaries. We are not voluntourists. What are we then? There doesn't seem to be a familiar paradigm for answering that question, and we always get a bit of a cock-eyed look when we explain, We are here studying education in Peru.

Now that the initial excitement of the first few days in Peru has morphed into a weekly routine, it is time for us to get down to academic business. Our university partner here in Peru calls our program, "Diverse Contexts of Education in Peru," and that is exactly right.

Our first few days in Lima, Peru go a little something like this: Land when it's dark and groggily marvel at the traffic. Shock your brain with full immersion into Spanish, even when sleep deprived. Meet students, professors, teachers, kids, coordinators, host families, organizers. Eat. Eat. Eat. Walk. Walk. Walk.

While living in Mexico, I joked that speaking Spanish forced me to be far more Zen about life: Since I could only speak in the present tense, I was forced to just live in that present tense.

This blog began as regular travel emails when I was a naive undergrad exploring the globe, my meditations on wherever I was on that school break (or break from school). It has since grown into something more, a record of parenting, teaching, politicking, community-building, struggling, healing, exploring, growing, and laughing -- a record of my present tense.
