Up In The Andes

Up In the Andes

Up in the mountains of the Cusco region is a small town called Andahuaylillas. It is framed by the hills of the Andes, a greenish yellow ground cover reflecting the high altitude rays of the sun. A tiny plaza sits outside a masterpiece of a church, and by day, the plaza is rimmed by a dozen vendors of woolens and jewelry and llama-themed tchatchkes.

Who Is The Teacher?

Who Is the Teacher?

Unless you're in my line of work, studying teaching and education, you probably don't spend a lot of time wondering, "Who is the teacher?" That may in fact seem like an absurd question to you. I could ask the question differently to try to get at some of what I'm questioning: Who was your favorite teacher?

Spotted in the woods by the Milwaukee River.
Laying in the Peruvian emergency room, a few hours after breaking my leg and with the shock of the pain wearing off, I looked over at Margaret, my currently designated “responsible family member” and said, “I’m wondering what the message is from the Universe in this one.” She smiled at me, but having known me only about ten days, didn’t quite know what to say. “Be careful on stairs? Love, Justice, & Privilege

If you watched the most recent royal wedding, you would have heard my husband's grade school religion teacher, Reverend Michael Curry, offer up a pretty powerful sermon on love. Not just romantic love, the kind celebrated that day in a very British church with a very un-British homily, but transformative love.

Expanding Our Contexts

We have reached the half-way point in our trip, which is flying by. It's hard to remember that what we are experiencing is a carefully curated set of experiences that help us to "see" the big ideas of our courses.

    About

While living in Mexico, I joked that speaking Spanish forced me to be far more Zen about life: Since I could only speak in the present tense, I was forced to just live in that present tense.

This blog began as regular travel emails when I was a naive undergrad exploring the globe, my meditations on wherever I was on that school break (or break from school). It has since grown into something more, a record of parenting, teaching, politicking, community-building, struggling, healing, exploring, growing, and laughing -- a record of my present tense.
